Unit 10. Study and education. Образова́ние. *Education.* Where Unit 9 looked at work, today we look at study — from the learner's perspective. Some of these words you've met before in other contexts. Today we meet them more fully. Let's start with the two main educational settings. Шко́ла. *A school.* — Шко́ла. You'll remember шко́ла from earlier units — we mentioned it briefly in Unit 6 and used it as a workplace in Unit 9. Today we see it from the learner's side — where students study. Универси́тет. *A university.* — Универси́тет. Five syllables, stress on the last. Where higher education happens — standard bachelor's and master's programs, the same structure as much of Europe. Now, two words for *teacher* — and Russian distinguishes between them. Учи́тель. *School teacher.* From Unit 9, where we met учи́тель as a profession. Преподава́тель. *University instructor — a professor or lecturer.* Russian distinguishes school teachers from university teachers; they use different words. We'll use both depending on context. Two more setting words. Класс. *A class.* — Класс. klass. A class — both the group of students and the room where they meet. Same as English *class* in both senses. Уро́к. *A lesson.* — Уро́к. From Unit 6 — we used уро́к briefly there. Today it's our core word for *lesson* in the educational sense. So our six words today: шко́ла, универси́тет, учи́тель, преподава́тель, класс, уро́к. In lesson 2, you'll learn how to say you're a student — Я учу́сь — and how to say you're learning Russian — Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к.

Lesson 2. How to say you're a student — and how to say you're learning Russian. Two phrases. First — Я учу́сь. *I'm a student.* Or *I'm studying.* Same shape as Я рабо́таю from Unit 6, Я ношу́ from Unit 8, Я рабо́таю учи́телем from Unit 9 — a fixed first-person phrase. The -сь ending makes it reflexive — it's how Russian builds this kind of meaning. You don't need to think about that mechanic right now. Just feel the pattern: Я учу́сь means *I'm a student* or *I'm studying.* Now the gendered version. If you're male: — Я студе́нт. *I'm a student (male).* If you're female: — Я студе́нтка. *I'm a student (female).* Same pair as моя́/мой from Unit 5 — Russian uses different forms depending on gender. Студе́нт for male, студе́нтка for female. Both mean exactly the same thing — *I'm a student.* And both work alongside Я учу́сь: — Я студе́нт. Я учу́сь. — Я студе́нтка. Я учу́сь. *I'm a student. I'm studying.* Two ways of saying the same thing, both used naturally. Now the second phrase — and this one is special because it might describe you right now. — Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. ya u-CHU RUS-skiy язы́к. *I'm learning Russian.* Literally, *I'm learning Russian language.* Right now, in this app, you're doing exactly this — Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. You can say this about other languages too — Я учу́ англи́йский язы́к, Я учу́ францу́зский язы́к. The phrase "Я учу́ + language + язы́к" is your fixed expression for *I'm learning a language.* Quick note — Я учу́ has another meaning in different contexts (teaching, learning a specific subject). For now, at this level, just use it with a language name. That's the safest, most natural way to say what you're doing right now. So your two phrases for today: Я учу́сь — I'm a student or I'm studying. And Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к — I'm learning Russian. In lesson 3, we'll look at study objects — what students actually use.

Lesson 3. The objects students actually use — books, notebooks, dictionaries, the things you carry to class. Six everyday study objects. Listen for the stress on each. Кни́га. *A book.* — Кни́га. KNI-ga. You met кни́га briefly in Unit 6. Today it's our core study object. Feminine noun — so моя́ кни́га, not мой кни́га. Тетра́дь. *A notebook.* — Тетра́дь. The soft sign at the end softens the т. Feminine noun (despite ending in a consonant — that's why the soft sign matters). Ру́чка. *A pen.* — Ру́чка. Слова́рь. *A dictionary.* — Слова́рь. Stress on the second syllable. Useful word for anyone learning a language — you'll see слова́рь on language apps, dictionaries, and online tools. Уче́бник. *A textbook.* — Уче́бник. From учи́ть (to teach/learn) plus -ник (object) — literally *the teaching object.* Masculine noun — so мой уче́бник. Доска́. *A board.* — Доска́. The blackboard or whiteboard at the front of a classroom. Common word in Russian schools — учи́тель пи́шет на доске́, the teacher writes on the board. So our six: кни́га, тетра́дь, ру́чка, слова́рь, уче́бник, доска́. You can use the possessive forms from Unit 5 — моя́ кни́га, мой уче́бник, моя́ ру́чка — to talk about your own study objects. In lesson 4, we'll explore Russian education culture more broadly.

Lesson 4. Russian education culture. Образова́ние в Росси́и. A look at how Russians think about study and learning — useful context for understanding what students go through and how language fits into their world. Russian education has a long tradition of academic depth. Mathematics, physics, literature, languages — Russian universities have produced great scientists, writers, mathematicians for centuries. Education is genuinely valued, and being well-educated carries social weight. A key concept worth knowing — специа́льность. — Специа́льность. *Specialty.* Russian students choose a специа́льность early — not the broad *major* of American universities, but a more specific vocational direction. Программиро́вание, медици́на, лингви́стика. Five-year programs that go deep rather than broad. Russians often refer to themselves by their специа́льность even years after graduation. "По специа́льности я лингви́ст" — *By specialty, I'm a linguist.* Even if they no longer work in that field, the credential follows them. Two more useful words in this context. Сло́во. *A word.* — Сло́во. The building block of language. язы́к. *A language. Or a tongue, literally.* — Язы́к. язы́к. You met this in lesson 2 — Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. Today it's worth knowing on its own. Russian education values these words and languages literally — knowing multiple yi-zy-KI is a mark of education in Russian culture. In lesson 5, we put together your education story — what you study, what you're learning right now.

Russian education culture

Russian distinguishes clearly between school and university worlds — and the words follow. Школа is school: pupils sit in a класс (classroom), taught by an учитель. Университет is university: students study with a преподаватель. Higher education follows the standard bachelor's and master's structure, and saying what you study — Я учусь, Я учу русский язык — is one of the first things fellow students will ask about. The учитель / преподаватель distinction matters to Russian ears: use учитель for school teachers and преподаватель at university.

Final lesson of Unit 10. Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. The capstone. Макси́м will introduce his education story — and something special happens at the end. Let's hear it. — Меня́ зову́т Макси́м. Ма́ма — учи́тель. Па́па — инжене́р. Я студе́нт. Я учу́сь в университе́те. *My name is Макси́м. Mom is a teacher. Dad is an engineer. I'm a student. I study at university.* Макси́м folds together name, family, and current education situation in four sentences — clean, complete, calm. — Моя́ специа́льность — программиро́вание. Я учу́ программиро́вание четы́ре го́да. *My specialty is programming. I've been studying programming for four years.* The специа́льность concept from lesson 4, used naturally. Note — Я учу́ программиро́вание here, in the learn-sense, with a specific subject. We taught the language pattern; he's extending it because he's a native speaker. As learners, the safer place is Я учу́ + language. — Я рабо́таю программи́стом в о́фисе. У́тром я рабо́таю. Ве́чером — я учу́сь. *I work as a programmer in an office. In the morning I work. In the evening — I study.* He works AND he studies — Russians often do both, juggling work and ongoing education. — И ещё — я учу́ англи́йский язы́к. Ка́ждый день. Э́то тру́дно, но интере́сно. *And one more thing — I'm learning English. Every day. It's hard, but interesting.* Listen to what Макси́м is doing right here. He's a Russian native speaker telling you he's learning English. The same shape, same effort, same daily commitment that you're making with Russian — except in reverse. Right now, in this app, you're doing what Макси́м does. Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. You're learning Russian. Every day. It might be hard. It's interesting. And it matters. — Вот моя́ исто́рия. А вы? Что вы у́чите? *That's my story. And you? What are you learning?* Макси́м turns the conversation back to you. The questions are direct — Что вы у́чите? — what are you learning? You have your answer now: Я учу́ ру́сский язы́к. You're learning Russian. Unit 10 complete. You've gone from naming six education words in lesson 1 to telling your full education and learning story in this capstone. Real conversation, real situations, real you. The next unit takes us into new territory.
