Unit 11. Hobbies and free time. Хо́бби и свобо́дное вре́мя. — Хо́бби. *A hobby.* A modern loanword in Russian — it doesn't change its form, which makes it pedagogically friendly. Хо́бби stays хо́бби whether you have one, want one, or talk about someone else's. Today we meet six everyday activity categories — the kinds of things Russians do for fun. Listen for stress on each. Спорт. *Sport.* — Спорт. sport. One syllable, just like English. Used broadly for anything from football to gym workouts to running. Му́зыка. *Music.* — Му́зыка. Stress on the first syllable. You'll recognise it — an old European borrowing that Russian shares with English. Кино́. *Cinema, film.* — Кино́. Stress on the second syllable. Russian *cinema* — both the place where you watch movies and movies as an art form. Russians love their кино́. Телеви́зор. *Television.* — Телеви́зор. Four syllables. The physical TV set, or the activity of watching TV. Modern Russians might also say сериа́л for a TV series — we'll meet that word in lesson 3. Литерату́ра. *Literature.* — Литерату́ра. Stress on the fourth syllable. Literature has deep roots in Russian culture — we'll explore that in lesson 4. Иску́сство. *Art.* — Иску́сство. Stress on the second syllable. Art broadly — visual art, music as art, performance. So our six categories: спорт, му́зыка, кино́, телеви́зор, литерату́ра, иску́сство. Plus хо́бби as the umbrella word. In lesson 2, you'll learn how to say you do something — Я занима́юсь спо́ртом, Я занима́юсь му́зыкой. And in lesson 3, we'll get into specific sports. You may remember футбо́л from Unit 7 — we mentioned it when explaining where футбо́лка comes from. We'll meet футбо́л properly soon.

Lesson 2. How to say you do an activity — Я занима́юсь. *I do, or I'm engaged in.* A fixed first-person phrase, like all the others we've met — Я рабо́таю from Unit 6, Я ношу́ from Unit 8, Я учу́сь from Unit 10. Now — something interesting. Я занима́юсь combines two patterns you've already met as fixed phrases. The -сь ending makes it reflexive — same shape as Я учу́сь from Unit 10. And the activity word takes an instrumental ending — same shape as Я рабо́таю учи́телем from Unit 9, where учи́тель became учи́телем. You've met both pieces. Я занима́юсь combines them. Just feel the pattern. — Я занима́юсь спо́ртом. *I do sport, or I'm into sport.* Спорт became спо́ртом — same instrumental ending you met in Unit 9. — Я занима́юсь му́зыкой. *I do music.* Му́зыка became му́зыкой — the feminine instrumental ending. — Я занима́юсь литерату́рой. *I'm into literature.* Same feminine pattern. Notice — masculine words get -ом (спо́ртом), feminine words get -ой (му́зыкой, литерату́рой). Just feel the difference. You don't need to memorize the rule. — Я занима́юсь иску́сством. *I do art.* Иску́сство is neuter — gets -ом, like the masculine pattern. So Я занима́юсь + activity in instrumental form. One fixed-phrase pattern, applicable across all the activity categories you met in lesson 1. In lesson 3, we'll meet specific sports and the instruments — and a new pattern, Я игра́ю.

Lesson 3. Specific sports and instruments — and the verb that connects you to them. Я игра́ю. *I play.* A fixed first-person phrase, like the others we've met. Russian uses two different prepositions with Я игра́ю — depending on whether you're playing a sport or a game, or playing an instrument. Just notice the pattern. For sports and games — в. — Я игра́ю в футбо́л. *I play football.* You may remember футбо́л from Unit 7 — that's where we explained that футбо́лка, the t-shirt, comes from this word. Today, футбо́л gets its own moment. — Я игра́ю в те́ннис. *I play tennis.* — Я игра́ю в ша́хматы. *I play chess.* Ша́хматы — note the plural form, like English *chess pieces* but used as one game. For instruments — на. Same verb, different preposition. — Я игра́ю на гита́ре. *I play guitar.* Гита́ра becomes гита́ре after на — same -е ending pattern you met in Unit 9 with в шко́ле. — Я игра́ю на пиани́но. *I play piano.* Пиани́но is another foreign-origin word that doesn't change — same as пальто́ from Unit 8. Stays пиани́но whether you play it or describe it. So — в for sports and games, на for instruments. Just feel the pattern. And one more modern word for what Russians watch. — Сериа́л. *A TV series.* Modern word, very common — Russians watch сериа́лы the same way you might. Useful word to know. And игра́ — *game.* — Игра́. The umbrella word for a game. Connected to Я игра́ю — they share the same root. Lesson 4. Russian leisure culture. О́тдых в Росси́и. — О́тдых. Russians rest the way people everywhere do — sometimes actively, sometimes by doing nothing at all. But one concept really is load-bearing: the да́ча — the summer house outside the city. — Да́ча. О́тдых на да́че — *rest at the dacha* — famously means everything but rest: gardening, repairs, endless small projects, even house reconstruction. Russians joke about this, and the joke is true. Literature holds a special place too — Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy aren't museum pieces; they're quoted in everyday conversation. And sport carries real weight: football has deep roots, sport schools raise world-class athletes, and chess is genuinely a national pastime. In lesson 5, we put it all together — what you love, what you do for fun, how it fits with your work and study. Your full self-introduction, hobbies included.

Russian leisure culture

Russian leisure culture centers on отдых — a concept that doesn't quite map to English 'rest.' Отдых is active rest — walking in a forest, gathering at a dacha, reading a novel, playing chess with a friend. Russians rest by engaging, not by stopping. This shows up in how Russians live with literature — Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy aren't museum pieces but part of everyday conversation, quoted and referenced naturally. Reading a great Russian novel is a form of отдых that runs deep. Sport carries similar weight: football has historical roots, sport schools (спортивные школы) produce world-class athletes from young ages, and chess is genuinely a national pastime. When Russians talk about hobbies, they often touch a deeper register — what you do for отдых tells others something real about who you are.
