Narration (Sarah)
Unit 12. Body parts. Ча́сти те́ла. *Parts of the body.* Until now in MyScribe, we've talked about who you are — your name, your family, what you do, what you wear, what you like. Today we move into a different territory — your physical self. The face, the body, and how to say when something hurts. Let's start with the face. Seven words today, including some you may have encountered briefly in earlier units.
Голова́. *Head.* — Голова́. Three syllables, stress on the last. Голова́ — the head. Feminine noun.
Лицо́. *Face.* — Лицо́. Two syllables, stress on the second. The face as a whole — what you see in the mirror.
Глаза́. *Eyes.* — Глаза́. Notice we're meeting глаза́ as the plural form directly — eyes come in pairs, so we learn the natural form, same way we learned брю́ки in Unit 8. The singular form (глаз) exists, but глаза́ is what you'll use most.
Нос. *Nose.* — Нос. nos. One syllable. You may have seen нос before in MyScribe's display content — today it gets its own moment.
Рот. *Mouth.* — Рот. rot. One syllable. The mouth — used for eating, speaking, and smiling.
У́ши. *Ears.* — У́ши. Like глаза́, we meet у́ши as the plural directly — ears also come in pairs. Same pattern. And finally — зу́бы. *Teeth.* — Зу́бы. Plural — you have many teeth. We'll use this word in lesson 3 when we learn how to say something hurts. Yes, the dentist context. All these words follow the possessive patterns you learned in Unit 5 — мой нос (my nose, masculine), моя́ голова́ (my head, feminine), моё лицо́ (my face, neuter). The patterns hold; you don't need to learn new ones. So our seven face words: голова́, лицо́, глаза́, нос, рот, у́ши, зу́бы. In lesson 2, we move from face to body. Then in lesson 3, we learn how to say when something hurts.

Lesson 2. From face to body. Five more words for the larger parts of you.
Рука́. *Hand or arm.* — Рука́. Stress on the second syllable. One useful detail — рука́ covers both 'hand' and 'arm' in Russian. The word doesn't distinguish them the way English does. Context tells you which part is meant.
Нога́. *Leg or foot.* — Нога́. Same pattern as рука́ — one word covers both 'leg' and 'foot.' Russian thinks of the limb as a whole.
Па́льцы. *Fingers or toes.* — Па́льцы. PAL'-tsy. Plural form direct — fingers come in groups. And like рука́ and нога́, па́льцы covers both 'fingers' and 'toes' depending on context.
Спина́. *Back.* — Спина́. Stress on the second syllable. The back — important word for lesson 3 where we learn to say *my back hurts.*
Плечо́. *Shoulder.* — Плечо́. Stress on the second syllable. The shoulder. Neuter noun. All five take the same possessives from Unit 5 — моя́ рука́ (my hand), моя́ нога́ (my leg), ma-EE па́льцы (my fingers), моя́ спина́ (my back), моё плечо́ (my shoulder). Listen to Ка́тя — мои́ is the plural form, embedded here. — Э́то мои́ па́льцы.
Э́то мои́ па́льцы — that's my fingers. The patterns from earlier units carry forward. So our five body words: рука́, нога́, па́льцы, спина́, плечо́. Combined with the seven face words from lesson 1, that's twelve body-part words. In lesson 3, we learn the pattern Russians use when something hurts — and it's a pattern worth understanding because it works for more than just body parts.

Narration (Sarah)
Lesson 3. The most useful pattern in this unit — how to say when something hurts. У меня́ боли́т. My [body part] hurts. Three pieces — У меня́, possessive context meaning *I have* or *to me.* Боли́т, the verb meaning *hurts* or *aches.* And the body part comes at the end. Now — something worth marking. You've met both pieces of this pattern in earlier units. У меня́ — possessive context, the same shape as У меня́ есть from earlier conversations.
And the verb agrees with the number of the body part — same way you noticed that some words like брю́ки work as plurals back in Unit 8. You've met both pieces. У меня́ боли́т combines them. Just feel the pattern. Let's hear examples. — У меня́ боли́т голова́. My head hurts. Singular body part — голова́ — so the verb is singular — боли́т. — У меня́ боли́т спина́.
My back hurts. Singular again — спина́ — боли́т. — У меня́ боли́т зуб. My tooth hurts. Notice we say зуб here, not зу́бы — when one specific tooth hurts, we use the singular. Useful for the dentist. Now — what about when more than one thing hurts? The verb changes form. — У меня́ боля́т глаза́. My eyes hurt. Глаза́ is plural, so the verb is plural — боля́т.
Just notice the ending change from боли́т to боля́т. — У меня́ боля́т зу́бы. My teeth hurt — when more than one tooth is involved. — У меня́ боля́т но́ги. My legs hurt. Both legs, so plural form. So: боли́т for one body part, боля́т for two or more. Russian verbs agree with number — same as we noticed with plural words like брю́ки in Unit 8.
Just feel the pattern. One useful note — you can use this pattern when seeing a врач, the doctor we met in Unit 9. У врача́ (at the doctor's), you say what hurts: У меня́ боли́т голова́. У меня́ боля́т зу́бы. Real Russian for real conversations. And here's something interesting — this pattern works for more than just body parts. Russians use it for emotional states too. У меня́ боли́т душа́ — my soul hurts, emotionally. У меня́ боли́т се́рдце — my heart hurts, often in the emotional sense.
We won't focus on those today, but it's worth knowing the pattern extends. In lesson 4, we'll explore Russian medical culture — the терапе́вт, and how Russians take care of themselves at home.

Lesson 4. Russian medical culture. Здоро́вье в Росси́и. — Здоро́вье. When something hurts, Russians usually start at home. Чай с мёдом — tea with honey. Чай с лимо́ном — tea with lemon. Traditional remedies carry real weight; they're the first response to a headache or a sore back, and they're how Russians take care of themselves before anything else.
But when home remedies don't help — you visit your терапе́вт. — Терапе́вт. A терапе́вт is the general doctor at the clinic: the first door for most health questions. Unit 9 introduced врач as a profession someone holds; терапе́вт names the doctor you actually go and see. And asking after someone's health isn't small talk in Russia — it's genuine concern.
Health conversations are direct. In lesson 5, we put it all together — the терапе́вт, and how Russians take care of themselves at home.

Traditional remedies carry real weight; they're the first response to a headache or a sore back, and they're how Russians take care of themselves before anything else. But when home remedies don't help — you visit your терапевт: the general doctor at the clinic, the first door for most health questions.
Unit 9 introduced врач as a profession someone holds; терапевт names the doctor you actually go and see. And asking after someone's health isn't small talk in Russia — it's genuine concern. Health conversations are direct.
