Communicative competency
After this unit, you'll be able to name urban places, describe where you are in the city (в + place), say where you're going (Я иду в [place] as a set phrase), and recognize the cultural shape of a Russian city — civic walking, the radial центр, and the community space of the двор.

Narration (Sarah)
Now Unit 14 — City and town. Го́род и центр. In Unit 13 you furnished кварти́ра — a home inside a building. Now step outside. The street is у́лица, the open square is пло́щадь, and the whole place is го́род. Russian cities have a heart центр. You met that idea already: in Unit 13 ку́хня was the heart of the home. A city has a heart too, and it's called центр. Let's start with four foundations.
Го́род. *City, or town.* Го́род. Two syllables, stress on the first. Masculine. Го́род covers both 'city' and 'town' — context tells you which.
Центр. *Centre.* Центр. One syllable. Masculine. The heart of a Russian city. Same word you've seen in compounds like центр Москвы́. We'll come back to what центр means culturally in lesson 4.
У́лица. *Street.* У́лица. Three syllables, stress on the first. Feminine.
Пло́щадь. *Square.* Пло́щадь. Notice пло́щадь ends in that soft sign — like дверь back in Unit 13, like тетра́дь before it. A small group of feminine words end this quiet way. You'll feel the shape now. So our four foundations: го́род, центр, у́лица, пло́щадь. In lesson 2, we move into places to go — eight specific places, each with a story from an earlier unit.

Narration (Sarah)
Lesson 2. From the city as a place to the places inside it. Eight specific words. A city is the places you go in it. Some of these you've met already — the магази́н where you work or buy bread, the парк where you rest, the музе́й where you learn. Today they become a set you can name.
Магази́н. *Shop, or store.* — Магази́н. Three syllables, stress on the last. Masculine. You met магази́н briefly in Unit 9 — "Я рабо́таю в магази́не" — and behind every meal in Unit 7 was a магази́н somewhere.
Банк. *Bank.* One syllable. Masculine. Where you go for money — Unit 4's Ско́лько сто́ит lives here.
Апте́ка. *Pharmacy.* — Апте́ка. Three syllables. Feminine. Where you go when something hurts — Unit 12's терапе́вт might send you here.
По́чта. *Post office.* — По́чта. Two syllables. Feminine. Where you send a letter. This one has a little quirk we'll meet in lesson 3.
Парк. *Park.* — Парк. park. One syllable. Masculine. Where Russians rest — Unit 11's о́тдых lives here, too.
Теа́тр. *Theatre.* — Теа́тр. Two syllables. Masculine.
Музе́й. *Museum.* — Музе́й. Two syllables. Masculine. And one of them is a friendly word: it never changes its ending. Кафе́. *Café.* — Кафе́. Two syllables. Neuter and indeclinable — кафе́ here, кафе́ there, always кафе́. Where Russians drink Unit 7's чай and ко́фе. Remember *my* from Unit 5? It changes to match the word's gender — мой for masculine words, моя́ for feminine. The masculine places take мой; the feminine ones take моя́. Кафе́ is neuter, so its form never changes. Listen to Ка́тя use each one — э́то, from Unit 3, means *this is.* — Э́то мой парк. — Э́то моя́ апте́ка. That's the gender at work — мой, моя́. So our eight places: магази́н, банк, апте́ка, по́чта, парк, теа́тр, музе́й, кафе́. In lesson 3, we say where we are in each — and where we're going.

Narration (Sarah)
Lesson 4. The Russian city. — Ру́сский го́род. Most Russian cities are radial — they grow outward from — центр. and — центр. is the oldest, densest part, where the city keeps its history. It isn't quite an American *downtown*; it's the identity of the place — the heart of any Russian city. To live in a Russian city is to walk it — not for exercise, but to get where you're going: to — магази́н. to work, to a friend.
Walking is the default, and the city is built for it. And between the apartment blocks sits — двор. — the courtyard. — Двор. dvor. One syllable. Masculine. Not a private garden: shared ground where children play, neighbours talk, and older people sit on the benches. — двор. belongs to everyone who lives around it. And life there happens — во дворе́. — in the courtyard.
Same quiet ending you already know. — Я игра́ю в футбо́л во дворе́. I play football in the courtyard. — Я гуля́ю во дворе́. I take a walk in the courtyard. Centre, street, and — двор. — public life, lived on foot. In lesson 5, Макси́м takes us through his city. Folded self-introduction reaches its full A1 shape, with the emotional register a Russian feels for the place they call home.

Most Russian cities are radial — they grow outward from a центр, and the центр is the oldest, densest part, where the city keeps its history. It isn't quite an American 'downtown'; it's the identity of the place. To live in a Russian city is to walk it — not for exercise, but to get where you're going: to the магазин, to work, to a friend.
Walking is the default, and the city is built for it. And between the apartment blocks sits the двор — the courtyard. Not a private garden: shared ground where children play, neighbours talk, and older people sit on the benches. The двор belongs to everyone who lives around it. Centre, street, and двор — public life, lived on foot.

Narration (Sarah)
Final lesson of Unit 14. Мой го́род — My city. Макси́м takes us through his Moscow, and the folded self-introduction reaches its full A1 shape: name, family, work, home, and city. — Меня́ зову́т Макси́м. Я из Москвы́, Москва́ — мой го́род. My name is Макси́м. I'm from Moscow — Moscow is my city. — У меня́ есть семья́: жена́ и сын. I have a family: a wife and a son. — Я рабо́таю в о́фисе в це́нтре. Ка́ждый день я иду́ в центр.
I work in an office in the centre. Every day I walk into the centre. Notice — в це́нтре is location, в центр is motion. The same masculine word, one line apart, only the -е different. Just hear it. — Я живу́ в кварти́ре. I live in an apartment. — Я люблю́ мой центр — ста́рый, краси́вый, мой. I love my centre — old, beautiful, mine. Ста́рый and краси́вый are new — just feel them.
The warmth is in present tense. — В це́нтре есть теа́тр, парк и кафе́. Мой люби́мый музе́й то́же в це́нтре. In the centre there's a theatre, a park, and a café. My favourite museum is in the centre too. Люби́мый — favourite — relative of люблю́. — Ве́чером я пью ко́фе в кафе́. In the evening I drink coffee at a café. — Москва́ больша́я, но мой го́род — мой дом.
Moscow is big, but my city is my home. Каки́е у вас люби́мые места́? And your city? What are your favourite places? Макси́м closes by turning to you — your city, your places, the home you build wherever you live. Unit 14 complete. The folded self-introduction reaches its full A1 shape here: name, family, work, home, city. You can describe yourself, your people, what you do, where you live, where you're from — in Russian, on foot.
