Welcome to Unit 6. In the last unit, you learned to talk about the people in your life — your family. Now we turn to something equally personal: how you spend your days. Unit 6 is about daily life. And it starts with one of the most common questions in any language: what do you do? Ка́тя, the phrase? — Я рабо́таю. *I work.* Four syllables, stress on the second syllable of рабо́таю. — Я рабо́таю. Once more? — Я рабо́таю. You already know Я from earlier units — *I.* And рабо́таю is the form of the verb *to work* when you're talking about yourself. Я рабо́таю works the same way. The full verb is рабо́тать, and you'll meet other forms later, but for now: Я рабо́таю means *I work.* There's also a noun — рабо́та — the same root, meaning *work* or *a job.* Put *my* in front of it — моя́ — and you've got *my work,* using the possessive pattern from Unit 5. Макси́м, what do you do? — Я рабо́таю. Я инжене́р. Макси́м works, and he's an инжене́р — *an engineer.* Notice something interesting: Russian doesn't use a word for *am.* He didn't say the equivalent of *I am an engineer* — just *I,* then the job, with no *am* in between. Russian skips that little verb in statements like this. You've actually seen it before, in earlier units — you just may not have noticed. Ка́тя? — Я рабо́таю. Я учи́тель. Ка́тя works, and she's an учи́тель — *a teacher.* Same shape: *I,* then the job, no *am.* You don't need to memorize инжене́р or учи́тель — just notice how Russians say what they do. A quick cultural note. In Russia, people often share what they do early in conversations — naming their job directly, matter-of-fact. It's not bragging or status — it's just part of how people introduce themselves. So if a Russian asks what you do, a short answer is completely normal: Я рабо́таю, or simply your job. One more thing worth saying. Not everyone works — some people study, some are retired, some are caregivers, some are between jobs. Russian has phrases for all those situations, and we'll meet them in future lessons. For now, Я рабо́таю is the foundation, and the structure works for whatever you do. Last lesson you got your first daily-life verb — I work. Today the next daily-life essential: eating. And along the way, we start meeting the times of day in Russian. Ка́тя, the phrase? — Я ем. Short and simple — ya YEM. Just two syllables. The verb here is есть, meaning *to eat* — a slightly irregular verb, but Я ем is the I-form, and that's all you need for now. Same fixed-phrase pattern as the verb from last lesson. Once more? — Я ем. Let's hear it in context. Макси́м, when do you eat? — У́тром я ем за́втрак. Днём я ем обе́д. Ве́чером я ем у́жин. A lot just happened. Макси́м said three things, one for each meal of the day. У́тром — *in the morning* — he eats за́втрак, *breakfast.* Днём — *in the afternoon* — he eats обе́д, *lunch.* Ве́чером — *in the evening* — he eats у́жин, *dinner.* Three meals, three times of day. The structure stays the same: time-of-day, Я ем, meal name. Don't worry about memorizing all those words yet. You're hearing them — that's enough for now. You'll meet them properly in the next lesson. For today, the important thing is Я ем — the verb. A quick cultural note. In Russia, обе́д — the midday meal — has traditionally been the main meal of the day. Bigger than English-speaking lunch usually is. So when a Russian talks about обе́д, they might mean a substantial meal, not just a sandwich. Worth knowing. Ка́тя, your turn — when do you eat? — У́тром я ем за́втрак. И ве́чером я ем у́жин. Ка́тя skipped lunch in her answer — many people do that on busy days. Notice she said "и" between her two statements — *and* — joining them naturally. The structure stays the same. Listen and say it along with Ка́тя. — Я ем. Excellent. Я ем — the second verb of Unit 6. You can now talk about working and eating. "Утром" (*"in the morning"*), "завтрак" (*"breakfast"*), plus "обед" (*"lunch"*) and "ужин" (*"dinner"*) — exposure only, just notice them.

Two verbs down — work and eat. Today the third, and one of life's necessities: sleeping. We're also going to lock in the times of day you've been hearing. Ка́тя, the phrase? — Я сплю. Stress on the сплю — ya SPLYU. The "пл" at the start takes a moment, but once you have it, it's straightforward. Once more? — Я сплю. Same fixed-phrase pattern you know now from the last two verbs. The verb is спать, *to sleep,* and Я сплю is the I-form. You don't need the other forms yet. Now, the times of day. You've already heard three of them in the last lesson. Let's lock all four in. Ка́тя? — У́тром. У́тром — *in the morning.* — Днём. Днём — *in the afternoon, during the day.* — Ве́чером. Ве́чером — *in the evening.* — Но́чью. And но́чью — *at night.* That's the new one. Four times of day, covering the full cycle: у́тром, днём, ве́чером, но́чью. Morning, afternoon, evening, night. A small note about how Russian thinks about time of day. The boundaries aren't sharp clock-times — they're more about what people are typically doing. У́тром is when people are starting their day. Днём is the middle, when work and activity happen. Ве́чером is when things wind down. Но́чью is late, when most people are asleep. You won't usually hear Russians arguing about whether 5pm is днём or ве́чером — it shifts naturally with context. Let's put it all together. Макси́м, your day? — У́тром я рабо́таю. Днём я ем. Но́чью я сплю. There it is. Three verbs, three times of day, one full sentence each. In the morning he works. During the day he eats. At night he sleeps. Every word vocabulary you now know. Ка́тя? — Ве́чером я ем. Но́чью я сплю. Ка́тя gave a shorter version — in the evening she eats, at night she sleeps. We've built up verbs and times of day. Now we add the dimension that makes scheduling possible: the days of the week. Plus three essential words — today, tomorrow, and yesterday. Before we start, a quick orientation. In Russia, the week starts on Monday, not Sunday. Russian calendars run Monday through Sunday. So when you hear the days of the week in Russian, they're going to start with Monday — and that's the first day of the Russian week. Ка́тя, let's go through them. Monday? — Понеде́льник. Four syllables. — Понеде́льник. Tuesday? — Вто́рник. Wednesday? — Среда́. Thursday? — Четве́рг. Friday? — Пя́тница. Saturday? — Суббо́та. And Sunday? — Воскресе́нье. Seven days, seven new words. Don't try to memorize them all right now — let them wash over you. You'll meet them again, and again, until they stick. Here's a small memory aid for three of them. Вто́рник, четве́рг, пя́тница — Tuesday, Thursday, Friday — are built from numbers. Вто́рник from второ́й, *second.* Четве́рг from четы́ре, *four.* Пя́тница from пять, *five.* Three of the seven days are basically *second day,* *fourth day,* *fifth day.* Useful for remembering them. Now the three time-anchor words. Today? — Сего́дня. Small spelling quirk — it's written with the letter г in the middle, but pronounced like a *v.* — Сего́дня. Tomorrow? — За́втра. Yesterday? — Вчера́. Three short words — сего́дня, за́втра, вчера́ — that anchor everything in relation to right now. Let's put it together with the verbs you know. Макси́м, what about today? — Сего́дня я рабо́таю. That means *today I work.* Notice he combined сего́дня with the verb you learned in Unit 6's first lesson. The vocabulary connects. Ка́тя? — За́втра я сплю. That means *tomorrow I sleep* — maybe Ка́тя's planning a long weekend. Same combining pattern: time word plus the verb. Listen and say the days along with Ка́тя. — Понеде́льник. Вто́рник. Среда́. Четве́рг. Пя́тница. Суббо́та. Воскресе́нье. Excellent. You now have the days of the week and the three time anchors. This is the final lesson of Unit 6. No new words today — instead, let's hear what a real day in Russian sounds like. Across this unit you've built a toolkit: three verbs, four times of day, seven days of the week, plus сего́дня, за́втра, вчера́. Now let's hear it all connected. Макси́м, walk us through your day. — Сего́дня понеде́льник. У́тром я рабо́таю. Днём я ем обе́д. Ве́чером я то́же рабо́таю. Но́чью я сплю. Listen to how it flows. He opened with *today is Monday.* In the morning he works. During the day he eats lunch. In the evening he works again — he's having a busy Monday. And at night he sleeps. She opened with *tomorrow is Tuesday.* Ка́тя works in the morning, eats during the day, eats dinner with her family in the evening — the *with family* phrase is a callback to last unit — and sleeps at night. Notice how she used Я рабо́таю, Я ем, and Я сплю all in one description. Did you notice what just happened? Three verbs, the times of day, the days of the week, the time anchors. No new vocabulary. Everything they needed, you already have. Here's the invitation — and like the family capstone, you don't need to say it out loud or write it down. Just think. What does your day look like? Picture it in Russian. What do you do in the morning? During the day? In the evening? What's today, what's tomorrow? Run through your own day in your head, in Russian, and notice how much you can already say. — Попро́буйте. Ка́тя again says "попро́буйте" — give it a try. Take a quiet moment and map your own day onto what you've learned. And that completes Unit 6. You started Unit 5 able to greet people and ask for things, and you turned inward to family. Unit 6 turned to daily life. Now you can talk about who's in your life and how you spend your days. That's two big pieces of who you are, in Russian. Молоде́ц!
