Welcome back. Today we start a new unit — food. Food is one of those things you talk about every day. What you ate, what you like, what you want. So we'll spend a few lessons here, building up the words for it. Let's start with the basics. Some of the most common foods you'd hear in any Russian kitchen. — Хлеб. *Bread.* Хлеб. — У меня́ есть хлеб. *I have bread.* Notice we're using a pattern you already know — у меня́ есть. We learned that with family. It works for food too. — Вода́. *Water.* Вода́. — Молоко́. *Milk.* Молоко́. — Мо́жно молоко́, пожа́луйста? *Can I have milk, please?* That's Мо́жно — the polite request you learned in First Conversations. — Мя́со. *Meat.* Мя́со. — Сыр. *Cheese.* Сыр. — Яйцо́. *Egg.* Яйцо́. — Фру́кты. *Fruit.* Russians say фру́кты — usually in the plural. Like saying *fruits* in English, but it's the standard form. — О́вощи. *Vegetables.* Also typically plural in Russian — о́вощи. Eight words. The everyday basics. Bread and salt

Bread in Russia carries weight beyond food. The phrase хлеб-соль — literally *"bread and salt"* — names a traditional welcome: guests are greeted with a loaf of bread topped with a small dish of salt, an offering that says *you are welcome here*. You'll see it at weddings, formal arrivals, sometimes when meeting important visitors. Even when the literal ritual isn't performed, the cultural weight of bread remains. Saying "у меня есть хлеб" carries a small echo of that — bread is never just bread.

Last lesson, we learned eight foods. Today, we add something useful — how to say you like food. Or don't. There's a Russian verb — люблю́. It means *I love* — but in everyday Russian, it also means *I like.* Russians use it for both. So "Я люблю́ хлеб" can mean *I love bread* or just *I like bread.* Context tells you which. — Я люблю́ хлеб. *I love bread.* Or — *I like bread.* — Я люблю́ молоко́. *I love milk.* — Я люблю́ мя́со. *I love meat.* You've got the pattern — Я люблю́, then the food. Let's hear it with the others. — Я люблю́ сыр. Я люблю́ яйцо́. *I love cheese. I love egg.* — Я люблю́ фру́кты. *I love fruit.* — Я люблю́ о́вощи. *I love vegetables.* Now — the opposite. What if you don't love something? Russian handles this beautifully. You just add не before the verb — same little word you already met in Я не понима́ю, way back in Unit 3. — Я не люблю́ о́вощи. *I don't love vegetables.* Макси́м is being honest — not everyone loves о́вощи. — Я не люблю́ мя́со. *I don't love meat.* That's it. Я люблю́ — I love it. Я не люблю́ — I don't. One little word, не, flips the meaning. — Я люблю́ хлеб. Я не люблю́ мя́со. Ка́тя is letting us hear them together. I love bread, I don't love meat. You can now say what you love — Я люблю́. And what you don't — Я не люблю́. Today, we add another way to say *I like.* Russians have a second expression — Мне нра́вится. It also means *I like.* A little softer than Я люблю́ — less *I love it* and more *I'm into this.* Two new foods to use it with. First — суп. — Суп. *Soup.* Суп. — Я люблю́ суп. *I love soup.* Ка́тя's using the pattern you already know. — Мне нра́вится суп. *I like soup.* Макси́м's using the new one — Мне нра́вится. Same idea, slightly softer. Now the second food — карто́шка. — Карто́шка. *Potato.* Карто́шка — that's the everyday word Russians use. There's a more formal version, but you'll hear карто́шка constantly. — Мне нра́вится карто́шка. *I like potatoes.* Let's hear Мне нра́вится with foods you already know. — Мне нра́вится хлеб. *I like bread.* — Мне нра́вится сыр. *I like cheese.* — Мне нра́вится молоко́. *I like milk.* Same pattern — Мне нра́вится, then the food. Just like Я люблю́. Quick note — you can also say Мне не нра́вится if you don't like something. The не goes in the middle this time. — Мне не нра́вится мя́со. *I don't like meat.* Good. You now have two ways to talk about what you like. Most Russians use both — depending on how strong the feeling is. Well done. — Молоде́ц!

You can name the foods. You can say what you like. Today, we put it all together — talking about meals. Two new drinks first. The most Russian of all — чай. — Чай. *Tea.* Чай. We'll come back to this in a moment — there's more to say about tea in Russia than just the word. — Ко́фе. *Coffee.* Ко́фе. — Я люблю́ чай. Я люблю́ ко́фе. *I love tea. I love coffee.* Same pattern from last lesson. Now — meals. You've heard these before, back in Daily Life. Today we use them. — За́втрак. *Breakfast.* За́втрак. — Обе́д. *Lunch.* Обе́д. — У́жин. *Dinner.* У́жин. And here's how Russians actually use these — a small pattern. На за́втрак — *for breakfast.* На обе́д — *for lunch.* На у́жин — *for dinner.* — На за́втрак я ем хлеб. *For breakfast, I eat bread.* Pattern — на за́втрак, then what you eat. — На обе́д я ем суп. *For lunch, I eat soup.* — На у́жин я ем мя́со. *For dinner, I eat meat.* Same shape three times. На plus the meal, then я ем plus the food. Now — ordering. If you're in a café or restaurant in Russia, you need this one. — Мо́жно чай, пожа́луйста? *I'd like tea, please.* The pattern is the same as Мо́жно from way back in First Conversations — but with пожа́луйста at the end, it becomes properly polite. — Мо́жно ко́фе, пожа́луйста? *I'd like coffee, please.* — Мо́жно суп, пожа́луйста? *I'd like soup, please.* Use this anywhere — café, restaurant, someone's kitchen. Tea in Russia

Tea in Russia isn't a quick drink — it's a moment. Чай is offered to guests almost automatically, often within minutes of arrival. The samovar, that ornate metal water-heater you might have seen in photos, was the household centerpiece for generations; even where electric kettles have replaced it, the cultural weight remains. Tea is sipped slowly, with sweets or бублики (*small bread rings*) on the table. Saying "я люблю чай" in Russia signals something different than in English — closer to "I'm part of this rhythm" than to a simple preference.

You've done it. Five lessons in — foods you know, ways to say what you like, meals, ordering. Today's lesson is different. We're not adding new patterns. We're letting two native speakers show you how it all sounds when it comes together. Listen to Ка́тя describing her day. Don't worry about catching every word — just notice how the patterns you've learned fit together naturally. — На за́втрак я ем хлеб и яйцо́. Я люблю́ ко́фе. Я пью ко́фе у́тром, ка́ждый день. Breakfast — bread and egg. She loves coffee, drinks it every morning. Notice — Я пью means *I drink.* You haven't met it formally, but you can guess from context. Meat and vegetables. She doesn't love fruit in the evening — she eats fruit in the morning. The patterns flow naturally — Я ем, Я люблю́, Я не люблю́. Now Макси́м. He's going to describe his day, and this time you'll hear a cultural moment we set up back in Unit 6 — обе́д as the main meal. — У́тром я ем за́втрак. Хлеб, сыр, чай. Чай — всегда́ чай. Morning — breakfast. Bread, cheese, tea. Tea — always tea. Макси́м is emphasizing how central tea is. — Обе́д — э́то гла́вное. Я ем суп, мя́со, карто́шку. И хлеб. Всегда́ хлеб. Lunch is the main meal — обе́д, as Макси́м says. He eats soup, meat, potatoes. And bread. Always bread. This is the обе́д-as-main-meal pattern from Unit 6 — for Russians, the midday meal is the substantial one. — Ве́чером у́жин. Ма́ленький у́жин. Я не люблю́ большо́й у́жин. Evening — dinner. A small dinner. He doesn't love a big dinner. Notice — большо́й means *big,* ма́ленький means *small.* You'll learn these properly later. For now, just hear the rhythm. That's it. Two Russians, two ways of eating, all the patterns you've learned. You can recognize them now. You don't need to produce these whole speeches — just listen, and notice how natural it sounds.
