We're starting Unit 8 — clothes. Оде́жда. A topic that comes up almost every day in conversation: what you're wearing, what you should bring, what looks right. Russian clothing vocabulary is concrete and useful — words you'll reach for almost every day. Let's start with five everyday items. Listen for each one, and listen for the stress. First — *shirt.* Руба́шка. Stress on the second syllable. — Руба́шка. A shirt with sleeves and buttons. Everyday Russian word, used for everything from work shirts to casual ones. Next — *trousers.* Брю́ки. Stress on the first syllable. — Брю́ки. Notice it's a plural form — Russian treats trousers as plural, the same way English does with 'pants' or 'jeans.' Then — *dress.* Пла́тье. The 'тье' ending is a soft consonant cluster — the 'ь' is the soft sign making the т soft, then the е. It comes together as one syllable. Now — *jacket.* Ку́ртка. A medium-weight jacket — what Russians wear in spring or autumn weather, or a light winter day. We'll come back to weather and clothes in lesson 3. And finally — *t-shirt.* Футбо́лка. Stress on the second syllable. The word literally comes from 'футбо́л' — football — because t-shirts were originally what football players wore. Useful when you remember it that way. So our five: руба́шка, брю́ки, пла́тье, ку́ртка, футбо́лка. Five everyday items. In the next activities, you'll see them, hear them, and start to recognize them on sight. In lesson 2, we'll learn how to talk about wearing them. For now — just the words.

In lesson 1, we met five clothing words. Today we learn how to say what you're wearing — Я ношу́. Stress on the second syllable. Я ношу́ means 'I wear' or 'I'm wearing.' Same shape as Я рабо́таю from Unit 6 — first-person, fixed phrase. You won't need to change the verb to use it. Let's pair it with the clothes we know. Я ношу́ руба́шку. *I'm wearing a shirt.* — Я ношу́ руба́шку. Notice the ending changed — руба́шка became руба́шку. Here's the rule: when a word ends in -а, that ending becomes -у after Я ношу́ — руба́шка to руба́шку, ку́ртка to ку́ртку. Я ношу́ пла́тье. *I'm wearing a dress.* — Я ношу́ пла́тье. Пла́тье doesn't change — words that don't end in -а keep their form, like пла́тье and брю́ки. Я ношу́ ку́ртку. Ку́ртка becomes ку́ртку. Я ношу́ футбо́лку. Same shift — футбо́лка becomes футбо́лку. And one more word for today — су́мка. *A bag.* — Су́мка. Not clothes exactly, but something you carry. And carry is what ношу́ also means. So: — Я ношу́ су́мку. *I'm wearing — or carrying — a bag.* Same verb works for both. Брю́ки is the one that doesn't change — because it's already plural. Я ношу́ брю́ки. So now you've got the pattern: Я ношу́ + the clothing word, with small endings that shift naturally. In lesson 3, we'll talk about what you wear when the weather changes.

Lesson 3. Weather and clothes. Кака́я пого́да? *What's the weather like?* Пого́да means weather. Stress on the second syllable. — Пого́да. In Russian, you describe weather with one-word adverbs. No 'it is' needed — the word does the work itself. Хо́лодно. *Cold.* — Хо́лодно. Cold. As an entire weather statement on its own. Жа́рко. *Hot.* — Жа́рко. Hot weather. Тепло́. *Warm.* — Тепло́. Pleasant warmth — not hot, just warm. So you can say: — Сего́дня хо́лодно. Сего́дня тепло́. Сего́дня жа́рко. *Today it's cold. Today it's warm. Today it's hot.* Simple statements with no verb — the adverb is the whole sentence. Now we pair weather with clothes. Когда́ хо́лодно — *when it's cold* — what do you wear? — Когда́ хо́лодно, я ношу́ ку́ртку. *When it's cold, I wear a jacket.* Ку́ртка from lesson 1 — now in the cold-weather context. When it's really cold, you need more than a jacket. Two new words for cold weather. Сви́тер. *A sweater.* — Сви́тер. Warm pullover, perfect for cold days. Пальто́. *A coat.* — Пальто́. A long, warm coat for proper winter weather. Notice пальто́ doesn't change its ending — it's an unchanging foreign-origin word in Russian. So: — Когда́ хо́лодно, я ношу́ сви́тер. Когда́ о́чень хо́лодно, я ношу́ пальто́. *When it's cold, I wear a sweater. When it's very cold, I wear a coat.* And when it's warm or hot? — Когда́ тепло́, я ношу́ футбо́лку. Когда́ жа́рко, я ношу́ пла́тье. *When it's warm, I wear a t-shirt. When it's hot, I wear a dress.* Light clothes for warm weather. So now you have пого́да — weather — хо́лодно, жа́рко, тепло́ — three weather words — and сви́тер, пальто́ — two more clothing items for cold days. You can describe today's weather and what you're wearing in response. In lesson 4, we'll talk about formal versus casual dress.

Lesson 4. Russian dress culture is more attentive to occasion than many learners expect. Today's question: Форма́льная и́ли повседне́вная оде́жда? *Formal or casual clothing?* — Форма́льная и́ли повседне́вная оде́жда? *Formal or casual clothing?* Two phrases to describe how someone is dressed. Russians often use these at events, gatherings, or work. Форма́льная оде́жда. *Formal clothing.* Повседне́вная оде́жда. *Casual, everyday clothing.* Now, the clothes that go with each. For formal occasions, you might wear a costume — костю́м. — Костю́м. For a man, this is a suit. For a woman, it can mean a coordinated outfit. Often described with an adjective — for example, традицио́нный костю́м. — Традицио́нный костю́м. *A traditional outfit.* Notice the ending of традицио́нный — it matches костю́м, which is masculine. This is normal Russian adjective behavior: the adjective matches the gender of the noun. For a dress, the same word changes its ending. Пла́тье is neuter — so adjectives match in a neuter form. But more commonly, we'd describe a све́тлое or тёмное dress. Све́тлая is the feminine form, used with руба́шка. — Све́тлая руба́шка. *A light-coloured shirt.* The adjective све́тлая matches руба́шка — both feminine. — Тёмная ку́ртка. *A dark jacket.* Same feminine pattern. Just feel the pattern — adjectives change endings to match the word they describe. We don't need to break it apart. Russians grow into this naturally as they hear it. So today you've met formal versus casual, plus three adjective pairs: традицио́нный/традицио́нная, све́тлый/све́тлая, тёмный/тёмная. In lesson 5, we put it all together.

Russian dress culture

Occasion guides dress in Russia. For formal events — work meetings, theatre nights, restaurant dinners — формальная одежда is the expected choice, and looking put-together is part of showing respect for the occasion. For casual settings, повседневная одежда works — tidy and well-fitted still reads best. The традиционный костюм you met in this lesson belongs to holidays and folk celebrations rather than daily wear. Светлые and тёмные tones (*light and dark colours*) carry their own associations — светлые for warmer months and lighter moods, тёмные for cold weather and formal occasions.

Final lesson of Unit 8. Time to put everything together — what you wear today, what you wear in different weather, what you wear to work, and what you wear when going out. We'll hear from Макси́м — he'll walk through his typical day and what he wears at each moment. — Сего́дня тепло́. Я ношу́ футбо́лку и джи́нсы. Э́то повседне́вная оде́жда. *Today it's warm. I'm wearing a t-shirt and jeans. That's casual clothing.* Макси́м is using тепло́ — the weather word — and the casual-clothing phrase повседне́вная оде́жда. — Когда́ я иду́ на рабо́ту, я ношу́ руба́шку. Све́тлую руба́шку. *When I go to work, I wear a shirt. A light shirt.* Notice the adjective све́тлую — that ending shifted because of the verb pattern. Макси́м is using a phrase shape Russians use naturally; we don't need to break it down. — Когда́ хо́лодно, я ношу́ ку́ртку. Когда́ о́чень хо́лодно, я ношу́ пальто́. *When it's cold, I wear a jacket. When it's very cold, I wear a coat.* The weather-clothes pairing from lesson 3. — Ве́чером, в рестора́не — традицио́нный костю́м. Э́то форма́льная оде́жда. *In the evening, at a restaurant — a traditional outfit. That's formal.* Макси́м brings together Unit 7's restaurant scene with Unit 8's formal dress: at a Russian restaurant in the evening, formal attire shows respect. — До́ма — повседне́вная оде́жда. Сви́тер, футбо́лка. Тепло́, удо́бно. *At home — casual clothing. A sweater, a t-shirt. Warm, comfortable.* So Макси́м's whole day: a casual t-shirt for warm weather, a light shirt for work, a coat for cold, a traditional outfit for a restaurant dinner, and comfortable layers at home. You can do the same. Сего́дня ты что но́сишь? *What are you wearing today?* In the next unit, we'll move into new territory. For now — well done.
