Unit 9. Work and professions. Профе́ссия. *Profession.* The word covers what someone does for work — врач, учи́тель, инжене́р, anything along those lines. You may remember a couple of these from Unit 6 — when we talked about daily life, Sarah mentioned инжене́р in passing, and учи́тель too. Today we meet them properly, alongside three more. Let's go through six everyday professions. Listen for stress, and notice — most of these are masculine nouns with one fixed form. Врач. *A doctor.* — Врач. vratch. One syllable. Used for doctors of all kinds — general practitioners, specialists, surgeons. Highly respected profession in Russian culture. Учи́тель. *A teacher.* — Учи́тель. Stress on the second syllable. The soft sign at the end softens the л. Same word for school teachers, instructors, and tutors. Инжене́р. *An engineer.* — Инжене́р. Three syllables, stress on the last. Same word as English engineer — borrowed long ago into Russian. Программи́ст. *A programmer.* — Программи́ст. Modern profession word, but very common — Russia has a strong tech sector. Stress on the last syllable. По́вар. *A cook or chef.* — По́вар. Stress on the first syllable. Used for any cook — professional chef in a restaurant, or someone who cooks at home seriously. Дире́ктор. *A director.* — Дире́ктор. Stress on the second syllable. A director of an organization, school, or company. We'll see this word again in lesson 4 when we talk about formality in Russian workplaces. So our six: врач, учи́тель, инжене́р, программи́ст, по́вар, дире́ктор. In lesson 2, you'll learn how to say what you are — Я учи́тель, or Я рабо́таю учи́телем. Both work, both mean the same thing. We'll get to that.

Lesson 2. How to say what you are — Я учи́тель. *I am a teacher.* Simple — just Я plus the profession word. No *am* needed in Russian, the way English would say it. But there's a second way that's just as natural — Я рабо́таю учи́телем. Literally, 'I work as a teacher.' Both Я учи́тель and Я рабо́таю учи́телем mean the same thing — 'I am a teacher.' Russians use both. The second form just means literally 'I work as a teacher,' but both are everyday equivalents. You'll notice the profession ending changed — учи́тель became учи́телем. That's a normal Russian pattern with this kind of verb. Just like with я ношу́ in Unit 8 — endings shift, but you don't need to think about why right now. Feel the pattern. Let's hear both forms with each profession. — Я врач. Я рабо́таю врачо́м. *I'm a doctor. I work as a doctor.* Same meaning, both natural. — Я инжене́р. Я рабо́таю инжене́ром. *I'm an engineer.* Either way works. — Я программи́ст. Я рабо́таю программи́стом. *I'm a programmer.* — Я по́вар. Я рабо́таю по́варом. *I'm a cook.* — Я дире́ктор. Я рабо́таю дире́ктором. *I'm a director.* Notice the pattern — the ending -ом or -ем gets added when you use Я рабо́таю. The bare form (Я + profession) and the worked form (Я рабо́таю + profession) are everyday equivalents. Both are correct, both are common. In lesson 3, we'll talk about where you work — Я рабо́таю в шко́ле, Я рабо́таю в больни́це.

Lesson 3. Где вы рабо́таете? Where do you work? — Где вы рабо́таете? *Where do you work?* A natural follow-up question after someone tells you their profession. To answer, you say Я рабо́таю в plus the place. Let's hear five common workplaces. — Я рабо́таю в шко́ле. *I work at a school.* Notice шко́ла became шко́ле — the ending shifted from -а to -е. That's the standard pattern after the preposition в when answering 'where.' Just feel it. A quick note on шко́ла — it can mean either 'where you teach' as a workplace, or 'where you study' as a student. Context makes it clear. In this lesson, we're using it as a workplace. — Я рабо́таю в больни́це. *I work at a hospital.* Больни́ца became больни́це. — Я рабо́таю в о́фисе. *I work at an office.* О́фис became о́фисе. — Я рабо́таю в рестора́не. *I work at a restaurant.* From Unit 7 — рестора́н becomes рестора́не. Макси́м could say this if he worked as a по́вар. — Я рабо́таю в магази́не. *I work at a store.* Магази́н became магази́не. So the pattern: Я рабо́таю в + workplace, with an ending shift on the place word. You don't need to analyze why — just notice the -е ending after в when answering 'where I work.' Lesson 4. Russian work culture. Рабо́та в Росси́и. Some practical observations on how Russians think about work — useful context as you talk with Russian speakers. Russian work culture takes professions seriously. Many — врач, инжене́р, программи́ст — take years of training, standard bachelor's and master's study. When someone introduces themselves as a врач, that profession carries weight. Russians often use profession titles more formally than English speakers do. A school director might be addressed as А́нна Ива́новна or even formally as дире́ктор. First names are reserved for close colleagues and friends. Many Russians take real pride in their work. Respect customs at work matter — greeting colleagues, using formal address with seniors, observing professional boundaries. These aren't strict rules but everyday norms that Russians notice. Two cultural words worth knowing. Колле́га — *colleague.* From Latin, borrowed long ago. — Колле́га. Pleasant, neutral term for someone you work with. And нача́льник — *your boss, the person in charge at work.* — Нача́льник. The one who owns or runs the workplace is the дире́ктор — the business owner. In lesson 5, we put it all together — name, family, daily life, profession — a full Russian self-introduction.

Profession titles carry real weight in Russian workplaces — naming what you do is a normal, expected part of introducing yourself. In formal settings, colleagues — especially senior ones — are often addressed by first name and patronymic (Анна Ивановна) rather than first name alone; you'll hear this in offices, schools, and hospitals. Respect customs matter: greeting colleagues when you arrive, and keeping formal address with seniors until invited otherwise. Three useful work words you now know: коллега (*colleague — a friendly, neutral term*), директор (*business owner*), and начальник (*boss — the person you report to*).
